Most first year Yale students live in suites of four to six students. What would you contribute to the dynamic of your suite? Here is your place to carefully cast yourself in both a genuine and positive light, while still writing something new. As a whole, your Yale supplemental essays should immediately show what your main area of academic interest s is, but should also show some surprising new details.

This question can potentially overlap too much with one of the other supplements, such as the question on your future major or what inspires you. Be wary of repetition! Reflect on your engagement with a community to which you belong. This is a very common supplemental essay topic. What are they looking for? You can define community any way you want to — your family, your school, your town, your online forum for Lord of the Rings enthusiasts — so long as you define it in the first sentence.

Then, back that up with concrete examples from your years in high school think of these examples as evidence to support your answer to the question given in the very first sentence.

Write about something you would like us to know about you that you have not conveyed elsewhere in your application. This question is very open-ended. One way to approach this question is to return to your Common App Activities List. Another approach can be to consider your high school and family context. Coalition and Common App Question 2: What person, past or present, would you invite to speak? What question would you ask? Yale presents students with many unique opportunities, and they want students who are curious and driven enough to benefit from them.

This is your chance to demonstrate these qualities. In most cases, your essay questions should convey something new about you, your personality, and goals. But with only 35 words, it can be useful to choose a person who fits well with the rest of your application. You probably want to avoid obvious choices like Einstein, Obama, Gandhi, etc. Coalition and Common App Question 3: You are teaching a Yale course. What is it called? Try to think outside the box and go beyond traditional academic subjects.

Perhaps you could teach a course on gardening, cooking, or even breakdancing. This is a fun, creative question and a fun, creative answer is appropriate. And, we hate to sound like a broken record, but the key here is to be specific. Try to create an equally specific title for your own course. You may also want to combine a few different interests to come up with a unique course title. Coalition and Common App Question 4: Most first-year Yale students live in suites of four to six people.

What would you contribute to the dynamic of your suite? A quick reminder about the essay questions: Reflect on your engagement with a community to which you belong. How do you feel you have contributed to this community? Common App and Coalition App.

Perhaps you organized a canned food drive or had classmates donate prom dresses for students in need. Or maybe you did something on a smaller scale, like resolving a dispute between members of your chess club or spending time with a lonely older neighbor.

Whatever your contribution, start by briefly discussing the issue you resolved, or the state of your community prior to your involvement. Then explain the specific steps you took to address the problem, as well as the results. How did your community benefit from your actions? Did you mature or grow from this experience? Learn any valuable lessons? Write on something you would like us to know about you that you have not conveyed elsewhere in your application.

You may also want to write a more creative essay here, as long as you can connect it to an important aspect of your identity. Computer Science and Engineering Essay words or fewer: What experiences have you had in this field? Have you taken relevant AP courses? Have you conducted research or experiments on your own?

Grown up with a parent or close relative in the field? Applicants using the Common Application or Coalition Application may request that the application fee be waived. Qualifications for a fee waiver are as follows:.

If you feel that your college application and financial aid application fees present a severe hardship for your family, but you are not sure if you meet the qualifications as outlined above, please consider the final bullet point carefully. More information about the guidelines Yale uses to determine eligibility for fee waivers is on the Fee Waiver page.

High school teachers can provide extremely helpful information in their evaluations. In addition to discussing your performance in their class or classes, teachers may also write about your motivation, intellectual curiosity, energy, relationships with classmates, and impact on the classroom environment.

Solicit recommendations from teachers who have taught you in core academic subjects, who know you well, and who have seen you at your best. It is also preferable, but not required, that letters come from teachers who have taught you during your junior or senior year of high school. Through experience, admissions officers have found that letters from junior or senior year teachers are the most illuminating. Yale does not encourage supplemental letters of recommendation.

Those considering a supplemental letter of recommendation should first read Supplementary Materials-Extra Recommendations. Recommendations should be submitted electronically through the Common Application or Coalition Application website.

If necessary, teachers may also submit their recommendations via mail or fax. Recommendations may be sent before or after you submit your application; materials that arrive before your application will be kept on file. The admissions office understands that it may not be possible in some cases for teachers and counselors to meet the application deadlines. We will make reasonable allowances for late school documents.
